Stepping Away From Work: Why Finding a Hobby Outside of Work Matters

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of work, deadlines, and constant screen time. But as much as we love what we do, finding a hobby outside of work is essential for maintaining a healthy balance and fostering a little self-care. Whether it’s painting, reading or even gardening, a break from the everyday grind can help recharge our mental batteries and bring fresh perspective to everything!

One of our team members, Charlotte, has recently discovered the power of walking as a way to switch off. For her, stepping away from the desk and hitting the pavement has become the perfect way to clear her mind and embrace the simplicity of the world around her. In this week's edition, we’re diving into why having a hobby outside of work matters, and how walking has become Charlotte’s go-to ritual for unwinding and recharging - she’s even grown a pretty impressive social media audience in the process too.

Here’s what Charlotte had to say...

Do you think it's essential for everyone to have a passion outside of work?

Yes, I think it’s important to have something you love to do outside of work as well as loving your job, especially exercise, as it keeps your mind happy :)

How do you make time for your walking in your daily or weekly routine?

I usually walk right as I get home from work for 1-2 hours, and on weekends I walk as much as I can, sometimes all day!

Do you incorporate walking into your work breaks or leisure activities?

Not during work but sometimes I walk to and from work, which can be a really healthy habit - especially during the summer and those lighter months.

Your favourite memory or experience from a walk?

My favourite memory from a walk is probably walking down the third highest mountain in England, Helvellyn. It was in the dark, there was snow and ice on the ground, I was with my dad and younger brother and we didn’t know how the walk would go. At the time it was really hard, but we had a laugh and it's become a really nice memory to look back on and one we’re always bringing up and laughing about even now.

How do you think walking fosters creativity or helps with problem-solving?

It’s great because it's time to reflect and be alone with your thoughts and really think about things without the distractions my phone brings. We all know how easy it is to find yourself scrolling at nothing for hours on end.

Tell us a little bit about your social media accounts, has that motivated you more to keep moving?

I post a lot of pictures from my walks mainly on Twitter (now called X), but I also share on TikTok and Instagram too. It’s been really nice to see people from across the world like and comment on them, it inspires me to walk more and take a lot more pictures for people to see! It's also pretty cool getting to show people from different countries what England and my daily walks look like - and it's nice knowing I am inspiring others to take walks, take pictures and go outside too.

And finally, how do you keep warm during walks this time of year?

I love the Mckenzie & pop star knit, they keep me very warm and cosy in the cold!
