The Sunday Edit: Edition 9

WORKING TOGETHER AS SISTERS

As a family-run business, we’re incredibly fortunate to have not one, but three groups of sisters working alongside each other at our head office and shop each and every day. It’s a unique dynamic that makes work feel like home, especially during the busy festive period.

With December 25th just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the magic of Christmas and the traditions that make this time of year so special to us.

From shared memories, to the most unforgettable outfits and hairstyles we’ve all experimented with over the years - you’ve gotta love the 80’s! Christmas is a time when we come together as a family and leave work, at work!

It’s also the time of year that reminds us of the importance of family too. After all, the heart of The Style Attic is rooted in our shared experiences and the journey that got us to where we are today.

So in this week's Sunday Edit we’re taking a trip down memory lane and sharing a few of our favourite Christmas traditions, remembering memorable moments and the joy (and pains) we find in working together as sisters.

SISTERS: LEIGH, JADE & CHARLOTTE

Our founder Leigh, along with her sisters Jade and Charlotte, grew up surrounded by the enchanting Christmas magic created by their mum, Lisa. Now that they're older, they reflect on what those special holiday moments mean to them today.

Leigh explained:

"I love working with my sisters because no one knows me like they do. I know that if things go wrong – as they often can in a small business – they’ve always got my back, no questions asked, and we’ll tackle it together.

Being able to celebrate Christmas as a family, outside of work, is the perfect way to switch off, unwind, and enjoy some quality time together. Even though we all work side by side every day, family always comes first, and work takes a backseat when it’s time to be together."

Jade, the middle sister, shared what it’s like working alongside her siblings:

“I absolutely love working with my sisters – it means I never miss out on anything in their lives since we see each other almost every day. Charlotte and I work so closely together now that we’ve reached a point where we can either chat non-stop or work in complete silence, and it’s always perfectly fine. We’ve never had a big argument... and fingers crossed it stays that way!

One of my funniest Christmas memories at The Style Attic happened before I could even drive. I was working with Charlotte, and we had to walk from the office to the shop to drop off some holiday deliveries. As we were chatting, I wasn’t paying attention and somehow managed to trip UP the curb, stumble across the path, crash into someone's fence, and end up in their garden! The best part? The fence panel came off and landed on the other side of the garden. Safe to say, I’ll never forget that one!”

And when Jade plans her Christmas outfits, mum Lisa still knows best:

“My mum normally always helps me with my Christmas outfit! This year it’s sequins, which isn’t a surprise as she loves everything that glitters!”

Youngest sister Charlotte also said about her joy in work and family:

“I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s the little moments at home and at work that make being together so much fun."

SISTERS: CLARE, LISA & SARAH

The dynamic trio are the heart and soul of our head office and shop. It's their infectious personalities and love for life that make everyone around them embrace each day with the same energy and enthusiasm.

Clare reflected on this time of year and coming together:

"Working with my sisters means you always get the truth – no sugarcoating, just honesty. It’s the kind of environment where you can truly be yourself. There's definitely a bit more cheekiness when you work with siblings – like constant bribes and a lot of banter! But there's also a lot of compassion, as we know exactly what’s going on in each other's lives, both in and outside of work. We’re a fun family, and Lisa especially loves to play the fool – she’s the one turning up as the Grinch or some other Christmas character!

Over Christmas, we make sure to spend as much time together as possible. We’ve started a new tradition where we invite the whole family to Lisa’s cosy converted shed in the garden, complete with an open fire and gifts for everyone. I honestly can’t remember a Christmas Day without at least one of my sisters – there’s always a Christmas stocking for each of us too. I think we are the way we are because we grew up with such magical, musical parents. Performing and being a little bit extra was always in the cards for us!

The best thing about my sisters is that we all have different tastes in clothes, so we each bring our own style to Christmas Day – even if it’s just a pyjama party! My perfect Christmas would probably look like something out of a film, with a huge house, log fires, and plenty of space for all of us to eat, sleep, and celebrate. But honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing – I love them just the way they are."

Sarah said about this time of year, working with her family:

“Christmas is always a good laugh at The Style Attic, and us sisters like to have a sing and dance in the office to get us through the day. There is always one of my sisters, especially Clare (trained photographer), ready to take videos and pictures of you when you’re not looking - but what are family for if not to catch you out and embarrass you?!”

Oldest sister, Lisa, shared her thoughts on December and working with her sisters too:

“I love working with my sisters – I can always count on them to get the job done (most of the time, haha!). But in all seriousness, it’s such a joy to go to work every day knowing we’ve got each other’s support. It really makes all the difference.”

She continued:

“Being sisters means we have a special bond and we seem to read each other well, even when we disagree (which is hardly ever). But if we do have a little wobble, things don’t become an issue and we deal with it and move on quickly - I don't know if that's because I’m the eldest. I probably seem the bossiest, but that’s just my nature!”

We always kick off the holiday season with a big family gathering before Christmas Day, and one of my favourite traditions is dressing up as Santa or The Grinch for the little ones – something I hope never changes! But for me, it’s about more than just that. It’s a chance for us adults to sit back, have a laugh, tease each other, and reflect on the year we've all made it through together. It’s the perfect time to reconnect and share a moment of joy before the chaos of Christmas Day really begins.”

“Before The Style Attic, we’d always discussed our outfits for the holidays, and if anything, we’ve gotten even more particular since Leigh launched the brand. We all start planning our Christmas looks weeks in advance! But honestly, we each have such different styles outside of work, and we all approach styling in our own way. Clare is the ‘cool one,’ and Sarah always knows how to put together the perfect outfit. You’ll usually find us wearing something from The Style Attic, though – and that’s no accident!”

“Looking back, I think my most perfect Christmas was the one we spent as sisters in Australia, visiting family and eating dinner in the sunshine - it was amazing!

SISTERS: NEVE AND GRACE

Our youngest and newest team member, Neve, shared her thoughts on working with her older sister Grace:

“Most of the time it’s a lot of fun – we’re always taking the mickey out of each other! She can be a bit of a pain in the bum sometimes, but we get along really well, which makes the day enjoyable and I’ve loved being in the office together in the lead up to Christmas.”

“As for my favourite childhood Christmas tradition, it’s one we still keep up today. Every Christmas Eve, we gather as a family to watch The Polar Express and snack on chestnuts – it’s something I always look forward to."

Grace, the older sister to her namesake, shared her thoughts on working alongside her little sister:

"She’s a pain in the bum, but it’s also really lovely to be able to spend every day together. If I could create the perfect Christmas day, it would be waking up with my three sisters, celebrating Beth’s birthday (she’s our sister and a Christmas Day birthday girl!), opening presents, and then having the whole family over to play games and enjoy the evening together."

With three sets of sisters working side by side, our workplace is filled with honesty, humour, and plenty of cheek. Whether we’re teasing each other, supporting one another through the ups and downs of running a business, or just enjoying the simple moments, it’s the bond we share that makes working together so special.

Christmas, of course, brings out the best in us. From quirky traditions like Lisa turning up as the Grinch, to cosy family get-togethers in converted garden sheds, it’s all about making memories and celebrating together. In our family, Christmas isn’t just a time for presents – it’s an opportunity to reconnect, laugh, and embrace each other’s individuality. And when we bring that same spirit into the office, it’s no wonder that our team thrives.

Because at the end of the day, working with family means you always have someone who’s got your back, no matter what – and for us that’s the greatest gift of all.
